DOWNPOURS CAUSE FLOODING BUT FAIL TO BOOST RESERVOIRS

Unusual wet weather hit the province of Malaga earlier this week, when up to 250mm of rain fell, mainly on the western Costa del Sol and some inland areas. Drivers were affected by flooding on roads in Marbella and Estepona on Monday night while water affected some basements and garages, although few incidents were reported. The rain has done relatively little, however, to relieve the drought crisis as only the Concepción reservoir near Marbella has made significant gains. Much less rain fell around the province’s other main reservoirs, with only 24mm in the Conde del Guadalhorce and 25mm in La Viñuela, the most in need of water. The rain came after last week’s Andalusian drought committee meeting when further cuts to water use were encouraged. In Malaga, the Axarquía and the Guadalhorce town halls have been told to reduce demand from 200 to 180 litres per person per day, while the allowance on the western Costa del Sol goes from 225 to 200 litres.
